Cordoba

Cordoba is a city of philosophers, beautiful flowery streets and finesse patio, where culture, history and architecture were shaped by the three great religions -Christianity, Islam and Judaism.

 

Cordoba was founded by the Romans and quickly has become more important due to its strategic location Guadalquivir river. Because of the numerous and magnificent monuments being a confirmation of the presence of many civilizations, the town was included on the UNESCO list. As the greatest of his treasure was considered the Great Mosque (La Mezquita), which is one of the finest works of Islamic architecture. Was built on the orders of the last prince from the Umayyad dynasty from 785 r to the end of the tenth century on the foundations of a Roman temple and on the walls of the existing Visigoth basilica, whose columns have become the basis for new construction. Over the centuries, it underwent numerous modifications due to the prevailing rulers. On the other hand, after the conquest of Cordoba by the Christians they built a mosque in several chapels, and in the sixteenth century in the place of the prayer hall the catedral was builted. Today, La Mezquita of Cordoba is the most important attraction which draws many tourists (admission € 8). However, this is a place that actually need to see, and its unusual and rare anywhere else in the world combining cultures and religion makes a real impression and is amazing !!

 

As one of the finest viewpoints of the old town of Cordoba and the Mosque is the restored bridge from the reign of the Roman Puente Romano (Roman Bridge). At its southern tip is a fortified watchtower from the Muslim era (XII c.), The Torre de la Calahorra. It had the task to defend the passage to the other side of the river by Christian knights. Today, its interior is the Museo Vivo del Andalus, presenting the achievements of three cultures co-existing in Cordoba.

 

Another must-see is the Alcázar of Córdoba Catholic Kings (Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos), which surprises the beauty concealed inside his defensive wallsbecause the courtyards and sparkle with countless exotic gardens, shrubs and flowers. Fountain located here worth seeing especially on summer evenings when the device is magical spectacle of light and water.

 

Cordoba is one of those cities where it is worth to simply "get lost". Walking through the narrow streets between the numerous patterned flowers (the most famous is the Calleja de las Flores), we can admire the real spanish atmosphere, hitting numerous squares filled with restaurants, or open buildings, located in the middle of the patios. One of the most beautiful parts of the old town is the old Jewish quarter called Judería, which is the most important monument of the synagogue built in 1315 years, one of three in the whole of Spain preserved from that period.

 

Cordoba is worth to see in May, because then held the Fiesta de las Crices and Fiesta de los Patios Cordobeses , when the residents competing in the competition, open their patios and hidden in their interiors carpets of flowers, handmade Arabic mosaics, refreshing fountains and beautiful terraces.
